Edem, a Ghanaian rapper and performer, claims he is unconcerned about upsetting others simply because he is different.
This comes after a fan inquired as to why the rapper no longer releases rap tracks like he did in his early career.
“Being different has made you people uncomfortable but me dey ah suh,” he said.
He swiftly argued that people are programmed to believe that musicians must sing/rap in a certain way in order to appeal to music fans.
“People have been programmed to think that, if you be artist, you far pass this way,” he told Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz.
The ‘Toto’ singer also said that music genres were “invented by record labels and radio stations to categorize music.” His craft and abilities, however, are unclassifiable because they are “God-given.”
Edem also stated that, unlike some musicians who were and are still rapping, his creativity is not limited to merely rapping or following a specific kind of music.
“People dey rap from the time I dey rap and them still dey rap up till today, them no go fit sing. If them go fit, like them do am,” he added
“Flowking Stone is a rapper, so he cannot do dancehall, he cannot do reggae,” according to Edem. “Sarkodie is a rapper, so he cannot do reggae. Even on a reggae/dancehall tune with Samini, we all heard his verse – he rapped,” he said via Hitz FM
Meanwhile, Edem noted that rap music has never paid him, which is why he felt compelled to demonstrate his singing ability and pursue other commercial music genres, claiming that “man must eat.”
