Fiifi Coleman, an actor and producer, has criticized the government for wanting to build new theaters but doing little to refurbish the ones that are already in disarray.
The actor believes it is a misguided priority for the authorities to concentrate on developing new entertainment center when the National Theatre, which is 30 years old, is still in a deteriorated condition.
Fiifi Coleman’s production house enthralled Ghanaians in May with his debut theater play, “Caution! Women at Work”, which was acted by an all-female cast
Ghanaians saw a fantastic stage production, but in the background, Fiifi claimed he had to overcome a number of challenges the National Theatre posed.
“When I did my last play, I bought mosquito repellent myself to spray the entire building before the guests could come in because it was so unbearable; and it’s coming out of my pocket,” he said this in an interview with Hitz FM.
The producer also revealed that, he had to go beyond his budget to rent lighting and a sound equipment for his production, which cost him GHS7,000.
Fiifi explained how he had to use his phone to communicate with his crew rather than a talkback device (walkie-talkie), and even that the bad network coverage in the auditorium hindered his efforts
He thinks the government ought to fix the National Theatre before building new ones in light of his experience.
